An Unusual Kind Of Theft In Johor Jaya

Losing a car registration number plates is puzzling and at the same time causes the victim to worry.
This was expressed by Huan Wai Fong, 42, who found her Proton Waja car registration number plates missing after her day long work in her office in Taman Johor Jaya on April 10.
She said she parked her car bearing car registration number JGV 2859 in front of her office and was working all day long without realizing what has happened to her car.
She added that the whole incident was recorded by her office CCTV system which showed two men in a taxi parked beside her car and stole the front and rear registration number plates.
“I am puzzled with this rather unusual theft but at the same I am also concerned that the culprits will misuse it for criminal intent”, Huan commented.
She then lodged a report with the Taman Johor Jaya police station and urged the police to investigate the incident.

Someone's Using My Number Plate, Says Manager

JOHOR BARU: A 53-year-old sales manager here is crying foul that his car registration number has been used by someone else to commit traffic offences, resulting in seven summonses against him within two months.
"Someone is using the same car plate number as my Naza Citra," an angry Tan Kwee Huat (pic) claimed, saying he first got wind of the matter when he received a traffic summons on June 3.
"I checked my work schedule and realised that I was not in the area where the offence took place," he told a press conference at the office of Senator Khoo Soo Seang here.
After a second summons, this time from the Johor Baru city council, he went to a car park company in Permas Jaya to report the matter and verify pictures that accompanied the summons.
To his shock, he found that the car in the pictures was of the same colour and make as his own, with an identical number plate.
The difference, he said, was that his car had five stickers on the windshield.
Tan has lodged a police report at the Taman Perling police station.
State internal security, public order and traffic chief Supt T. Raveendran advised those who encounted such problems to report the matter as soon as possible.
"If they see the culprits having the same car plate numbers then they should call the police hotline at 07-221 2999.

IN THE first case of its kind, a businessman was jailed 10 months for conspiring with a croupier to cheat a casino of $31,500.

A district court heard yesterday that Tan Tiong Loon (right), 32, met Keith Yong Kee-Hwei, 24, of Marina Bay Sands, and promised the younger man a share of his winnings if the croupier would work with him.

At about 4.30am on Oct 7 last year, Yong used his hand to stop the Money Wheel from spinning to help Tan win $18,000 from his bet of $400. A casino patron saw it and blew the whistle on them.

Minutes earlier, Yong had done the same thing so that Tan, the only player at the Money Wheel table then, made $13,500 from a $300 bet. The pair were arrested days later, after Yong was handed $11,500 as his cut.

The duo were said to have also cheated the casino of unspecified amounts on two other occasions. Those charges were among 20 others for unrelated offences, which were taken into consideration by the judge for sentencing.

Yong’s case will come up later this month.

Tan committed the casino offences while on bail for exporting stolen cars to Brunei. For his dealings with 15 stolen cars between January and March last year, he was jailed a further three years and eight months, and barred from driving for three years.

Investigations revealed that he paid Ho Wei Siang, 29, $1,000 a month to set up and run Reliance Car Export firm in 2008. In December 2009, the pair started dealing in Toyota and Honda cars stolen in Malaysia.

They bought these cars and got them fitted with fake Singapore licence plates at a workshop in Johor Baru. The cars were driven here and exported to Brunei.

The scam came to light when a Malaysian saw his stolen Honda Accord, complete with fake plates, in a carpark here.
He then went to the police. When a tow truck was seen taking the car to the export processing zone in Tuas, the police closed in and arrested the duo.

Ho has been jailed a year for his role. For dealing in stolen property, Tan could have been jailed up to five years and fined. He could also have been jailed up to seven years and fined up to $10,000 for cheating.

Female MoneyChanger Escapes Death In Bold Robbery Using Gun And Parang

JOHOR BARU: The bodyguard of a moneychanger was shot dead at Jalan Kuning 2 here - in a daring robbery involving men armed with a gun and parang.
The female moneychanger was driving to a nearby bank yesterday to deposit money when the robbers used two cars to block her vehicle at 5.10pm.
She was accompanied by a friend and the bodyguard, in the 40s, who sat in the front passenger seat.
The robbers also blocked another car which was passing by.
Pontian MIC division chief Jasbir Singh - one of the passengers in the other car - said he saw four robbers exiting their vehicles. One was armed with a pistol while the others carried parang.
“The man with the gun was wearing a red mask and he shot at the car several times.
“The other men smashed the car's windows and quickly opened the boot.
“They grabbed a black bag and coolly walked across a large drain to the main road where they escaped in a red car,” he said.
Jasbir said the incident was over in 10 minutes.
Cafe attendant Shiong Chau, 32, said he heard the moneychanger screaming for help but the gun made him stay away.
He added that the victim would often come to his shop to have drinks with his friends.
Johor Baru South police chief Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaacob said both cars used by the robbers were reported missing in the Klang Valley.
ACP Zainuddin said the victim was shot in the chest.
He did not say how much was taken by the robbers.

Shop Assistant Shot In The Neck In Botched Robbery

KULAIJAYA: A 19-year-old shop assistant was injured in the neck after being shot in a failed robbery at a mobile phone shop in Taman Sawit here.
The victim and his 21-year-old brother were about to close for the day when a man, wearing a full-face helmet, entered the shop at about 10.15pm on Sunday.
He took out a revolver and demanded money from them.
Horrified, the victims screamed for help and the robber fired a shot, which hit the 19-year-old man.
The robber escaped empty-handed on a motorcycle.
Kulaijaya OCPD Supt Zulkefly Yahya said the victim, who was sent to the Kulai Hospital, was in stable condition and would be transferred to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru for further treatment.
In an unrelated incident, a 19-year-old robbery suspect was shot in the leg after he and an accomplice tried to evade capture during a 2km chase by the police.
A police motorcycle patrol unit had tracked the suspects, who were in a Proton Waja in Taman Johor Jaya at about 9.40am on Saturday.
Despite being told to stop f the suspects sped off and tried to ram the policemen before crashing into a car, which was parked in Jalan Dedap 24.
The suspects then fled on foot which led to the policemen firing two warning shots.
One of the policemen then fired a shot, which hit a suspect’s left thigh. He was detained but his 16-year-old accomplice escaped.
Johor deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm I Datuk Jalaluddin Ab Rahman said the suspect was being treated at the Sultan Ismail Hospital.
He said the accomplice surrendered at the Johor Jaya police station the next day.
“We also seized five Eramin 5 pills from one of them. The car that was used was reported stolen in Desa Cemerlang on Sept 15,” he said, adding that both suspects had been remanded until Friday.

Worker Shot In A Robbery Attempt

KULAIJAYA: A factory worker was shot in the shoulder in a robbery attempt when he was on the way to work recently. The 46-year-old man is now in stable condition after the 7.55am incident at Jalan Selong Jaya, Senai.
Kulaijaya OCPD Supt Zulkefly Yahya said that the victim was driving a Toyota van when his vehicle was forced off the road by two men in a white Proton Exora some 50m from his work place
“During this time, one of the suspects fired at the victim,” he said, adding that the suspects drove off.
Supt Zulkefly said despite being wounded, the victim drove to his workplace and was later sent to the Kulaijaya Hospital.
“Initial investigations revealed the Proton Exora in the shooting incident had fake number plates,” he said adding that one of the suspects drove the vehicle while the other sat at the back with the gun.
Supt Zulkefly said that the case was being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
He urged anyone with information on the case to contact the police hotline at 07-2212999.
In another unrelated case, two robbers, who were involved in a spate of robberies at 7-Eleven stores in the city were arrested by the police Ninja Squad within an hour after they hit three stores in Skudai.
Johor Baru (North) OCPD ACP Ruslan Hassan said the two suspects were involved in robbing three shops in Jalan Temenggung, Jalan Pendidikan and Jalan Keli recently.
In detailing the incident, ACP Ruslan said that the one of the suspects would enter the shop in the pretext of buying beer and cigarettes while the other would wait at the door.
Shortly after the cashier placed the items in a plastic bag, the two men would flee the scene on a motorcycle without paying for the items.
ACP Ruslan said the Ninja Squad based on CCTV footage gathered from the three shops, arrested the two men about an hour later.
“We picked up the first suspect at a coffee shop in Skudai Baru,” he said adding that the other suspect was apprehended at a house in the same area.
ACP Ruslan said police were investigating the case under Section380 of the Penal Code for theft.
“Both men could face a maximum 10 years imprisonment, a fine and whipping if convicted for the offence,” he said.
The police Ninja Squad comprises policemen who patrol the streets especially crime prone areas on scrambler motorcycles.
They target way side robbers and snatch thieves.

Shooting Victim Laid To Rest

JOHOR BARU: The nineteen-year-old girl who died after sustaining injuries to her head was laid to rest in an emotional ceremony.
Cheng Jun Wei, who succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, was the niece of Johor Motorcycle and Scooter Trader Association chairman Datuk Chen Kim Hock.
The girl was allegedly injured after a security guard opened fire on three robbers who had used her as a human shield while trying to escape with stolen goods on Tuesday night.
When met during the victim’s funeral ceremony at the Tiong Hua Crematorium here, Chen said that he was in Sabah when the incident occurred.

He explained that Jun Wei and her family were in the midst of moving to a new house in Taman Suria after staying temporarily at the house in Taman Majidee, which he owns.
“She was a wonderful girl with good prospects. She was very bubbly and I am still shocked that such a thing occurred,” he said.
Commenting on reports in the media, Chen hoped that the media would stop speculating and pointing fingers at any party.
“My niece suffered a coma after she was shot.
“She succumbed to her injuries and we as a family are still reeling from the news,” he said, adding that he hoped the media would report the matter accurately and not simply make up stories.
Chen insisted that the police should be given time to investigate the matter and praised Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff for enabling the post-mortem to be done expediently on Friday.
Meanwhile, Jun Wei’s father Cheng Yong Sang, 51, said that his family was still in shock over the loss of Jun Wei, who was the youngest of four siblings.
“I was very close to her as she often confided in me if she had any problems. We are devastated and the reality has not fully sunk in yet,” he said.
A Facebook page dedicated to Jun Wei, better known as Bobo Cheng to her friends, has recorded more than 18,000 condolences messages.
DCP Mohd Mokhtar said a task force had been formed to investigate the matter.
